Why Possum Exclusion Is the Foundation of Long-Term Possum Control
Removing a possum without sealing the entry point guarantees the problem returns. Here's why exclusion — not removal — is the real solution, and how the one-way door process works.
If there's one principle that defines how possum problems should be solved, it's this: removal without exclusion is a temporary fix, not a solution.
A possum in your roof is there because it found a way in. Remove the possum and leave that way in open, and the problem returns — often with a different possum, or a different animal entirely. The access, not the animal, is the core problem. Exclusion — finding and securing the entry point — is what makes the solution permanent.
Why Removal Alone Fails
Possums are territorial. A roof space that has housed a possum carries the scent and signs of previous occupation, which attracts other possums to the same location. If the entry point remains open, a new possum will often move in within days or weeks of the previous one being removed.
This is why customers who have had a possum removed without proofing frequently contact us again — sometimes multiple times — about the same problem. Each removal clears the current animal, but nothing has changed about the access. The cycle continues until the entry point is found and secured.
If the entry point isn't found and sealed, the problem isn't solved — it's paused. Exclusion is what converts a temporary removal into a permanent resolution.
The One-Way Door Process
Where practical, the preferred exclusion method is a one-way door. A one-way door is a temporary device installed over a Confirmed Active Entry Point that allows a possum to leave the roof naturally while preventing it from re-entering.
Importantly, a one-way door is not a trap. It does not catch the possum; it simply lets the animal leave through its normal exit route and then blocks re-entry. The possum is not handled, stressed or harmed — it leaves on its own terms, through a gap it was already using.
The process normally works as follows:
- The one-way door is installed over the Confirmed Active Entry Point identified during the inspection.
- The possum leaves naturally through the door — typically the same evening, as possums leave their shelter between dusk and approximately 11pm.
- The door remains in place for a minimum of four days to confirm that the possum has left and that no animals remain inside.
- Multiple possums can exit through the same one-way door, so a roof housing more than one possum does not require multiple devices on the same entry point.
- After exclusion is confirmed, the specialist returns to remove the one-way door and complete permanent proofing over the entry point.
The one-way door is the preferred method because it allows the possum to leave naturally without stress or handling. Where a one-way door is not practical — due to roof construction, access limitations or other factors — humane cage trapping is available as an alternative.
Permanent Proofing
The one-way door is the removal mechanism, but permanent proofing is the actual solution. Once exclusion is confirmed, the entry point is permanently sealed so that no possum — the original or any other — can re-enter through the same gap.
Proofing may also be recommended for potential future entry points — gaps that aren't currently being used but could provide access in the future. These are classified by risk level so you can make an informed decision about which additional proofing, if any, you want to proceed with. You are not required to proof every potential gap; the decision is yours after receiving professional advice.
Do not assume that every possible weakness must automatically be proofed. Proofing is recommended where it materially improves the long-term outcome, and you control the scope after receiving advice.
The 12 Month Workmanship Warranty
Approved possum proofing work is backed by The Possum Man's 12 Month Workmanship Warranty. The warranty covers the quality of workmanship and materials within the approved scope of work.
Specifically, if a possum re-enters through The Possum Man's proofing work because of a workmanship or material failure during the warranty period, that workmanship issue is rectified at no additional charge.
The warranty does not cover:
- Future wildlife behaviour that cannot be predicted or controlled.
- A possum discovering a different entry point elsewhere on the property — that is a new wildlife issue, not a warranty failure.
- Unrelated parts of the property deteriorating or changing over time.
A new or different entry point is a new wildlife issue, not automatically a warranty failure. The warranty covers the workmanship of the proofing that was completed — not the future behaviour of every possum in the neighbourhood.
When Trapping Is Used Instead
Where a one-way door is not practical — due to the construction of the roof, the nature of the entry point, or other site-specific factors — humane cage trapping is available as an alternative removal method.
Trapping is not the preferred method where one-way exclusion is practical, because it involves handling and relocating the animal rather than allowing it to leave naturally. Possums are released according to applicable NSW requirements.
Regardless of which removal method is used, the long-term solution remains the same: the entry point must be found and permanently secured. Trapping alone, without proofing, does not solve the underlying access problem.
The Complete Solution
A permanent possum solution has three components:
- Diagnosis — identifying that possums are the cause and finding all entry points.
- Removal — using the one-way door (preferred) or humane trapping to clear the current animal.
- Exclusion — permanently securing the entry point so the problem cannot return.
Skipping any of these steps weakens the solution. That's why every recommendation we make begins with diagnosis — so the removal and proofing address the actual cause, not an assumption.
