Possum Removal — Diagnosed First, Removed Humanely

Hearing thumping or scratching at night? Possums are the most common cause — but not the only one. We diagnose what's actually in your roof, identify how it's getting in, and remove it lawfully and humanely. The goal isn't just removal; it's addressing how the possum is accessing the building.

    The Problem

    The Problem You're Experiencing

Most customers contact us because they think they have a possum in their roof — usually because of something happening at night. These are the situations we hear about most often, described in your terms, before any solution is introduced. Diagnosis comes first, because roof noises can also be rats, mice or something else entirely.

    • Noises that wake you up

Heavy thumping, rolling or scratching sounds through the ceiling at night are the most common reason people reach out. Possums are nocturnal, so the timing is a strong clue — but it's not proof on its own.

    • You've seen a possum enter or leave

Watching a possum climb onto or into your roof is good evidence. But the entry points and the full extent of the problem still need to be found before any removal is planned.

    • You're not sure it's a possum

It's very common to assume possums when the cause is actually rodents, birds or something else entirely. Treating the wrong animal means the problem continues after removal.

    Signs to Look For

    Signs That Suggest Possums

These are symptoms — not a diagnosis. Several problems share the same signs, which is exactly why an inspection matters before any recommendation. Possums and rodents, in particular, are frequently confused.

    Loud thumping at night

Heavy, thumping or rolling sounds after dark are typical of a brushtail possum moving through the roof space.

    Heavy movement, not scurrying

Possums are heavy and deliberate; rodents are light and fast. The weight and rhythm of the movement is an important diagnostic clue.

Seen on the roof or near a gap

A possum seen climbing onto the roof or near a gap in the eaves is strong evidence of how it's accessing the space.

    Droppings or a musky smell

Larger droppings and a distinct musky odour can indicate possum activity, though these signs can overlap with other animals.

Symptoms alone don't confirm possums. An evidence-based inspection does — and it rules out the other causes that share the same signs.

    Diagnosis Matters

    Why Correct Diagnosis Matters

The same roof noise can be possums, rats, mice, birds or even a non-animal cause. The wrong assumption leads to the wrong solution, wasted money and a problem that returns — often with a different animal.

    Possums and rodents sound similar

Scratching and movement in the roof overlap between possums and rodents. The weight, timing and location help separate them — but only an inspection confirms it.

    Removal without exclusion fails

Removing a possum without finding and sealing the entry point guarantees another animal moves in. The problem isn't the possum; it's the access.

    Diagnosis protects your investment

An evidence-based inspection means you pay for the right solution once — correct removal plus correct exclusion — rather than the wrong solution twice.

    Our Method

    Our Possum Removal Approach

The Possum Man uses a systematic diagnostic process. Rather than diagnosing the problem from one sound, we consider the overall pattern — what you're experiencing, the physical evidence and the building conditions — before determining whether possum activity is present and how it's accessing the property.

    1. Step 1

      Listen

We start with what you have been experiencing — what the noise sounds like, where you hear it, when it occurs and any other signs you have noticed.

    2. Step 2

      Interpret

We consider whether the reported timing, movement and other signs are consistent with possum activity or whether another cause, such as rats, may need to be investigated.

    3. Step 3

      Investigate

Where an inspection is required, we assess the relevant areas of the property for evidence of possum activity, access routes and possible entry points.

    4. Step 4

      Correlate

We compare what you have reported with the physical evidence and building conditions rather than relying on any single sign.

    5. Step 5

      Diagnose

We determine whether possum activity is present and identify the likely access and entry points that need to be addressed.

    6. Step 6

      Resolve

Where possum activity is confirmed, we determine the appropriate removal and exclusion approach for the property, which may include a one-way door, trapping where appropriate and securing identified entry points.

    The Solution

    How Possum Removal Resolves It

Following diagnosis, this is how possum removal is carried out — not as a predetermined product, but as an evidence-based resolution that addresses the confirmed cause and prevents it returning.

    1. Step 1

      Confirm it's possums

We start from the diagnosed cause, not an assumption. If the inspection confirms possums, removal proceeds; if it reveals something else, we recommend the correct service instead.

    2. Step 2

      Remove lawfully and humanely

Possums are protected in New South Wales. Where practical, we prefer a one-way door — a temporary device fitted over the confirmed entry point that lets the possum leave the building naturally while preventing re-entry. Where a one-way door is unsuitable or impractical, humane cage trapping may be used instead. Either way, removal is carried out lawfully and humanely, in line with the requirements that govern native wildlife management.

    3. Step 3

      Secure the entry point

Removal alone isn't a long-term solution. Once the possum is out, appropriately securing the entry point is the foundation of long-term control — so another animal can't simply take its place through the same access.

The result is an evidence-based approach that addresses both the possum activity and the identified access point — not a temporary fix that lets the problem return.
