    The Problem

    Why Roof Valleys May Need Proofing

    Roof valleys are one of the areas we assess when investigating how possums or rodents may be accessing a property. Where a valley forms part of an identified or potential access route, steel Valley Guard may be recommended as part of the proofing solution.

    • Tiled roof valleys

      On suitable tiled roofs, Valley Guard can be fitted where a roof valley is identified as a relevant area requiring proofing.

    • Metal roof valleys

      Valley Guard can also be fitted to suitable metal-roof valley areas where proofing is required.

    • Why we use steel

      The Possum Man uses steel mesh because the system is intended for possum and rodent proofing. Plastic and aluminium guards can be damaged or shredded by animals, which is why we use steel for this application.

      We first assess whether the roof valley is relevant to the access problem before recommending Valley Guard.

    What Is a Valley Guard?

    A Valley Guard is a physical barrier fitted along a roof-valley line where that valley forms part of an identified possum or rodent access route. The Possum Man uses purpose-designed steel mesh, fitted to the roof profile, to help restrict that route.

    Tiled & metal roof valleys

    Valley Guard can be fitted to suitable tiled and metal roof valleys where the area requires proofing.

    Valley Guards are property-specific. Whether they are appropriate depends on whether a roof valley forms part of the identified access route and on safe access at the property.

    Diagnosis Matters

    Valley Guards Are One Part of Proofing

    A Valley Guard addresses access at a particular part of the roof. It does not replace the need to identify and address other entry points or access routes. Possum and rodent proofing considers the property as a whole so that the relevant access and entry issues can be addressed rather than relying on one measure in isolation.

    Valley guarding or other proofing?

    Where a roof valley forms part of the access route, a Valley Guard may be considered. Where entry occurs elsewhere, other proofing measures may be more appropriate. In some situations more than one access route may need to be addressed.

    Tree & vegetation access

    Nearby trees and branches can provide climbing access towards roof valleys and gutters, which may call for trimming or a Tree Guard.

    Roof & gutter access

    Where possums reach valley lines or gutter edges, access-control measures such as Valley Guards or Gutter Guards may be considered.

    Other access routes

    Nearby structures, overhead cables and building features may also provide access and require separate assessment.

    If an animal is already in the roof

    Restricting a valley access route does not by itself remove an animal already occupying the roof. Removal and proofing need to be considered together.

      Your inspection allows us to assess the relevant roof valleys and determine whether a Valley Guard is appropriate. If Valley Guard work is recommended, the installation is quoted following the inspection.

      Valley Guard — Quoted after inspection

      Where suitable, purpose-designed steel Valley Guard work is priced specifically for your property following the on-site assessment.

      Pricing & access conditions

    A Valley Guard addresses a relevant roof-valley access route as part of an overall possum or rodent proofing plan. It does not replace removal or proofing where these are required, and the property must still be assessed for other access routes. Leaf and debris reduction is a secondary benefit, not the primary purpose.
